What Does the New Red Dead Redemption Trailer Tell Us?

Ever since Rockstar announced back in 2013 that there would a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, fans have speculated the direction Rockstar will take the game. Will the new game be a sequel that follows previous protagonist John Marston’s son, Jack? Will our beloved cowboy and family man John somehow return? Or will we get a new character altogether? Now with the release of the new trailer and official poster, some of those questions may finally be answered.

The trailer itself reveals little in terms of story or plot. We’re not introduced to a singular character that we can immediately point to and say, “Yep, that’s our main character.” But the one thing Rockstar does show us is a band of seven men riding on horseback. Seven men riding with guns raised and faces covered like they’re about to go robbing. Which makes us wonder, could this be the old Dutch gang?

Unfortunately, we can’t tell from the trailer. We don’t even know if those seven horsemen will play a pivotal role in the upcoming game. They maybe side characters from a mission that the player will have to complete, or they could just be there for ambiance. Though if we look at the official Read Dead Redemption 2 poster it could suggest otherwise.
In the official poster, we see seven men standing at the forefront. Two of whom are theorized to be Dutch and Bill Williamson. If it is them, then it’s proof that without a doubt that Red Dead Redemption 2 will be a prequel.
What does that mean exactly? Does that mean that we get to see our favorite cowboy and family man, John Marston, again? Are we going to see the life of John as an outlaw with the gang before going straight?

Even though many fans would rejoice in seeing John Marston return to the screen, it’s most likely that it is not the direction Rockstar is looking to go with the game. It’s just not their motif.
Rockstar rarely follows a linear story through multiple installments within the same franchise. It’s not to say they won’t, but if their most famous franchise, Grand Theft Auto, is anything to go on, it’s more likely that we’ll be playing as a new character. That doesn’t entirely mean that a beloved character won’t make an appearance. Rockstar likes to have characters from other games pop up every now and then.

It’s very possible that Rockstar could continue on with a similar style of game play like they had in GTA V. Rather than follow one character’s arch, we’ll follow a few. The diverse geography from the trailer is an indication that that game might take place near the Rocky Mountains. With such a huge chuck of land used for the setting, it would make sense that the game will follow the journey of individual characters as they trek through the American west before coming together to form a gan in the desert. This could be the story of how Dutch formed the original Dutch Gang, or it could be the story of how Bill and Dutch met in a gang before forming the Dutch gang.Screen_Shot_2016-10-20_at_10.08.45_AM__2_.0.png

This is all speculation to be sure. All of this could be wrong and the story can totally follow another character like it did with John Marston. It could be that all seven of those men on the poster are new characters entirely. It could be that they are all characters from Red Dead Redemption that we’ve already seen. It could be a mixture of both.
We don’t know. What we do know is that if the Red Dead Redemption 2 is anything like its predecessor, we can expect Rockstar to deliver another stellar game.
