After hearing the possibility that Kingdom Hearts 3 may not launch until after 2018, many fans grew worried, but most just sighed at what is considered a typical major Square Enix game release nowadays. However, concerns were put to rest when the games director Tetsuya Nomura made an appearance on stage at Disney’s D23 Expo ‘Level Up’ panel. Here he presented a brand new, 5 and a half minute trailer for the game which confirmed a 2018 release year.
Alongside this was the announcement of a Toy Story world coming to the game, which was teased in last months trailer shown off at the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour in Los Angeles. The trailer showcases Sora, Goofy, and Donald in toy form, arriving inside Andy’s bedroom and fighting Heartless. Shortly after, they encounter Buzz, Woody (trailer was in Japanese so no Tom Hanks yet I’m afraid), and other members of the Toy Story cast. Here, they become allies and set out to the Galaxy Toys store in search for Organisation XIII.
Following this, they proceed out the window and down the roof, fighting Heartless as they go, and eventually reaching the toy store. Here, Sora is shown to be able to take control of toy mechs, in which he can jump, punch, and shoot enemies. The trailer then ends with an encounter with Xemnas, and the 2018 release date is shown. Later on, after the panel commenced, Nomura hinted at a second playable character that had been set as an ‘intention’, and also touched on a Switch release saying it would be considered after release on already announced consoles.
