On Saturday (26th of August), Sega held a Yakuza focused presentation that let us in on multiple new projects, including the previously leaked Yakuza Kiwami 2. In total 4 new titles were announced, some predicted by fans but some a complete shock. The presentation was presented by Toshihiro Nagoshi, who is the producer and director of the Yakuza series, and he was joined by multiple voice actors from the games, although to us English speakers we couldn’t understand a thing, so here’s a rundown of all that was announced.
First, we got a look at Yakuza Kiwami 2, which as previously mentioned was leaked the previous day on the Taiwanese PSN store. For those unaware, Kiwami means extreme in Japanese and whenever it gets pared with a Yakuza title, it means remake. This makes Kiwami 2 a remake of the original Yakuza 2, and much like the first Kiwami, it will have re-recorded voice acting, a new theme song, and upgraded graphics.
Those upgraded graphics will come in the form of the Dragon Engine, which was first used for Yakuza 6. As such, the game will have seamless maps of Kamurocho and Sotenbori, and other technical upgrades like 6. This remake will also feature fan-favourite Goro Majima as a playable character, who didn’t have much involvement in the original version of this game. His new storyline will also include the character ‘Makoto’ in some way who first appeared in 0, which released earlier this year (we highly recommend you play it). Yakuza Kiwami 2 will launch in Japan on December 7th 2017, and there’s no word on an English release just yet, but of all the games announced it’s certainly the most likely…
Next up we have ‘Shin Yakuza’, the next main title in the Yakuza series, which features a brand new protagonist called Kazuga Ichiban. He seems to be slightly more laid back than Kiryu but from what we’ve seen from the teaser, will still keep the same tone as other games in the series. Whilst we didn’t get too much info on this game, it won’t be long until we find out, as the team are going to show off the project at the coming TGS.
They did reveal that this protagonist will also lead Yakuza Online, which as the title suggests is an online Yakuza game coming in 2018. We didn’t get any gameplay but we were told it would be released on IOS, Android, and PC, which have all never featured a Yakuza game before. Neither of these titles have confirmation of localisation yet but it is quite likely for Shin Yakuza, or as it might be, Yakuza 7.
Last of all, we have Yakuza of the North Star (temporary name). This was probably the most surprising announcement of them all. Certain people out there may recognise the name and might have realised that Sega are making a Fist of the North Star game using Yakuza style gameplay. If you’re a fan you may understand what is going on in the trailer although it is something I am unfortunately not knowledgeable on. What I can tell you is that more details will be coming at TGS and that the game is using 0/Kiwami’s engine.
So what do you think of these announcements? Rather than tell us in the comments below, why not tell Sega directly in a survey they’ve put out? [Extreme apologies this article was so late, mainly uploaded it for consistency and so you all could follow what I’ve been writing. Sorry!]
